A US resume guide for Indian students: make your experience understandable

Present Indian qualifications, CGPA, internships and projects clearly on a US student resume, with original examples and a practical editing checklist.

Your resume does not need to hide where you studied or worked. It needs to help someone understand what you can contribute. If you are moving from an Indian university to a US internship or graduate job search, start by translating context rather than replacing your experience.

This is Gradlume's editorial approach to a student resume. Individual employers, academic programs and research positions may request different documents; follow their instructions first. A resume and an academic CV serve different purposes.

Choose a structure around the role

For an early-career industry application, try this order:

  1. Name, professional email, phone and relevant portfolio links.
  2. Education, including your current US program if you have started it.
  3. Relevant experience: internships, employment or research.
  4. Selected projects that demonstrate the target role's skills.
  5. Technical or professional skills you can explain in an interview.

You can move experience above education when your professional work is the stronger evidence. Aim for an easy-to-scan document rather than squeezing everything into an arbitrary page count. A reader should quickly find your dates, role and contribution.

Keep application identity details separate from your public resume. Avoid adding a passport number, Aadhaar number, Social Security number, bank details or scans of immigration documents. Supply documents only through a verified process when they are legitimately required.

Explain qualifications without inventing equivalence

Spell out an unfamiliar degree abbreviation once. For example, write “Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Engineering” rather than expecting every reader to interpret “BTech.” List the institution and location accurately.

If you include your CGPA, show the actual scale, such as “CGPA: 8.4/10.” Do not divide it into a supposed US GPA or change it to a percentage without an authoritative conversion required by the recipient. If an application asks for an evaluated equivalence, follow that application's instructions. Your resume can simply preserve the original result.

Coursework is useful when it supports the role and your experience is limited. Three relevant courses can communicate more than a list of every semester's subjects. Remove coursework once stronger evidence makes it unnecessary.

Give Indian employers enough context

A hiring manager may not recognize the company you worked for. Add a short description when it makes your responsibility clearer: a manufacturing supplier, a regional bank, an engineering design practice or a software services team.

Keep your real title. If it is unfamiliar, explain the work in the bullets. Calling an internship a full-time engineering position creates confusion when someone checks your dates or asks about your responsibilities.

For each bullet, answer three questions: What did you do? How did you do it? What changed or what did you verify? Quantify only results you can support.

Show what you contributed to a project

These examples are fictional illustrations, not claims you should copy into your resume:

Too vague: “Worked on final-year machine-learning project.”

More useful: “Built the preprocessing and evaluation pipeline for a student demand-forecasting project; compared a baseline model with two alternatives using a held-out test set.”

Too vague: “Participated in bridge design project.”

More useful: “Modeled two bridge-deck alternatives for a class design brief; documented load assumptions and checked the selected option against the course's design constraints.”

The second versions make the contribution and verification visible without inventing commercial impact. Replace each detail with your own work. If you have a measured result, add the measurement and the conditions under which it was obtained.

Keep skills tied to evidence

Use the terminology in the posting when it honestly describes your skills. A keyword appearing on a resume is not a substitute for being able to discuss it. Separate tools you used substantially from topics you only encountered in a course.

Check links in a signed-out browser. A portfolio that requires a private university login may be invisible to the recruiter. Never publish client files, employer code, patient records or classmates' personal information to create a work sample.

Finish with a role-specific review

Read the posting beside your draft. Highlight the three requirements you can demonstrate most strongly, then make sure the resume actually shows them. Check spelling, month/year dates, consistent headings and whether copied text remains readable.

Use Gradlume's fictional sample resume report to understand what the analyzer checks. You can then review your own resume with an account. For application forms asking about authorization, read answering sponsorship questions on OPT and confirm your own situation before answering.
